The American government can seem complicated but understanding how the federal government works is essential to participating in our democracy. The Dictionary of the United States Government makes this easier by breaking down the language of government—one clear, accessible term at a time—making it ideal for anyone seeking an introduction to politics.

Inside, you’ll find straightforward definitions for 350 key terms, including executive order, bicameral legislature, impeachment, pardon, filibuster, veto, and many more. Each entry explains what the term means, how it functions within the government, and how it appears in real-world situations.

Whether you’ve followed US politics for years or you’re preparing to vote in your first election, The Dictionary of the United States Government gives you the knowledge you need to participate confidently in our democratic system.
