The revised edition of A Different View of Urban Schools updates a unique story about the realities of urban education in America and provides new insights on the origin of urban education issues; the route to a diverse and effective teaching force; and the impact of federal legislation and corporate involvement on urban schools. Dr. Epstein’s analysis of problems is fascinating; her program for the creation of joyful engaging education is equally impressive. The result is a new perspective on what educational reform requires in American cities. This book will be useful to teachers, policy makers, school board members, and parents as well as in classes in multicultural education, ethnic studies, and the social foundations of education.
Kitty Kelly Epstein received the Marcus Foster Educator of the Year award while teaching English in a California public high school and then earned a doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received the outstanding dissertation award. She has prepared hundreds of urban secondary teachers at Holy Names College; has supervised dissertation studies through Fielding Graduate University; and has taught undergraduates at U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Epstein served as Education Policy Director for Mayor Ron Dellums and in this role she led a unique participatory policy-making process. She is the host of an education talk show on the Northern California radio station, KPFA-FM 94.1 and has written dozens of journal and newspaper articles. Dr. Epstein has made presentations and organized workshops in South Africa, Nicaragua, China, Jordan and other countries, and has been continuously active in movements for educational and economic justice.
