Disaster management is a comprehensive approach involving planning, preparation, mitigation, response, and recovery to address crises that surpass local capabilities. While emergencies are localized threats, disasters represent large-scale events that disrupt societal functions, requiring coordinated efforts across multiple sectors. Recent advancements in disaster studies highlight the political dimensions of disasters, viewing them as catalysts for societal change that impact governance, policies, and public debates. Disasters not only expose vulnerabilities but also reshape socio-political landscapes. The relationship between politics and disaster management is twofold: disasters shape political frameworks by prompting new policies and governance structures, while political decisions influence disaster preparedness, risk management, and responses. Effective disaster management necessitates robust healthcare systems, emergency protocols, and the ability to adapt to diverse hazards. Disaster Policy and Politics provides a detailed examination of disaster management, exploring the theoretical, historical, and policy aspects across ten chapters. It discusses governance, leadership, and decision-making in disaster contexts, along with the evolution of disaster policies and the roles of executive decisions in shaping response strategies. The book also explores the contributions of scientists and engineers, civil-military relations, and the impact of globalization on disaster management. With a focus on risk reduction, preparedness policies, and post-disaster recovery, this book serves as a valuable resource for students, policymakers, and professionals seeking to understand the complexities of disaster management and develop more effective strategies in an increasingly interconnected world.
