'Quite the best dog story ever written' Guardian 'One of my favourite books of all time' Jilly Cooper 1.25pm. Upstairs into dining-room. Family not finished lunch yet. Young Mr Brown throws a bread pellet at me, hitting me on the nozzle. An insult. I swallow the insult. A Dog Day is narrated by a lovable scamp of a terrier as he goes about his day rolling in mud, eating what he shouldn't, and generally wreaking havoc - all while keeping the Brown household wrapped around his paw. Featuring Cecil Aldin's delightful original illustrations, A Dog Day is filled with warmth, humour and more than a little bit of mischief. First published in 1902, it's a timeless classic that continues to enchant readers of all ages.
Walter Emanuel (1869 - 1915) was a well-known author and satirist. After working as a solicitor for five years, he left legal practice to pursue a career in humour writing. His work was featured in humour magazines such as Punch, where he had a weekly column. He is known for his anthropomorphic dog characters. A Dog Day is his most famous work. Cecil Aldin was born in 1870 and began his working life as a magazine illustrator. He soon became famous for his sporting prints, posters, children's books and pictures of old inns but he became world famous for his portrayals of dogs. It was said of him that he "captured the very soul of a dog". His original artworks are now highly prized by collectors and there are regular exhibitions of his work. A Dog Day has been his most enduring work.
