Starting life as a Roman fort where Ermine Street crossed the River Nene, Durobrivae developed into an important Roman town just outside present-day Peterborough. It acted as a market place for the salt trade from the Fens in the east and for the ironworks and potteries in the uplands to the west.
Dr Garrick Fincham has excavated widely in East Anglia and his PhD from the University of Leicester was on the Landscape of the Roman Fenland. He lives in Leicester.
