Well established as the ‘East Coast yachtsman’s bible’, this 21st edition of Jan Harber’s classic cruising companion marks the book’s 70th anniversary. Dating back to 1956 when Jack Coote, Jan’s father, produced the first black and white edition, East Coast Rivers continues to cover the rivers, curlew-haunted creeks and intricate shoals and swatchways of the Thames Estuary and surrounding rivers from Lowestoft to Ramsgate. This isn’t just a pilot guide, it is your friend in the cockpit, guiding you into and up the rivers, telling you about their history and unique character. It is also the memoir of a family’s history; exploring, capturing and celebrating this extraordinary sailing area. The text has been thoroughly updated, with the help of local yachtsmen and women, and contains new information about anchorages and facilities as well as better signposting to make it easier to use. It now contains QR codes to take you quickly to the main harbour and marina websites. Comprehensive pilotage and nautical information, based on years of local knowledge, is complemented by port information, illustrated throughout with photographs and charts, helping cruising sailors to make the most of their visit to this cherished cruising ground.
Janet Harber went afloat from a very young age, starting on her father’s cruising boats. As he wrote and updated this book, Janet and her sister Judy spent their childhood weekends and summer holidays exploring this area, helping with the research for East Coast Rivers. As an adult she has kept and sailed on boats based on the Roach, Orwell, Deben and Ore rivers and cruised the other rivers covered in this book extensively.
