Born in 1916 into an Irish Catholic family, Jennie Hawthorne spent her formative years in the heart of the East End, in a truly multicultural community. The anecdotes in this title are suffused by the sights, sounds and smells of the East End in the 1920s and '30s. It aims to serve as an evocation of a bygone age.
Jennie Hawthorne was born and brought up in the East End. She is a former English teacher, senior lecturer in economics, founder and editor of the magazine Charity World, and has written numerous articles for the national press. Jennie has published fifteen books, mostly on financial subjects. In 2000, at the age of 84, she was shortlisted as Millennium Business Journalist of the Year.
