Istvan Hargittai is an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Born in Budapest in 1941, he faced significant challenges early in life, including surviving a Nazi camp at age three after his father was killed in a slave labor camp. He also overcame obstacles to his education in socialist Hungary. Hargittai earned his master's degree in chemistry from Moscow Lomonosov University in 1965. He holds a Ph.D. and D.Sc. from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and has received honorary doctorates from Moscow Lomonosov University, the University of North Carolina, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea, and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Since 1989, he has been the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Structural Chemistry. He has authored or edited more than 50 books, with notable works including The Martians of Science and Buried Glory: Portraits of Soviet Scientists. He has also co-authored books with his wife, Magdolna Hargittai.
