The fishing industry’s critical dependence on the natural environment makes it very different from other economic sectors. How it can optimally exploit a common resource while ensuring its sustainability raises many economic challenges. Rögnvaldur Hannesson was Professor of Fisheries Economics at the Norwegian School of Economics in Bergen from 1983 to 2013. He has been a consultant on fisheries for the World Bank, the OECD and the FAO. His books include The Privatization of the Oceans (MIT Press 2004).
