Substantially revised and updated the second edition of this highly acclaimed text is both a vital guide and a valuable critical analysis. The book provides a contemporary comparative approach to the process of transformation of the economies of Eastern Europe and Russia. Supplying a large amount of factual and statistical information it also includes consideration of recent progress in the areas of macro-economic-stabilisation, micro-economic restructuring and integration into the world economy.
MARIE LAVIGNE, PhD, Emeritus Professor of Economics, taught at the Universities of Strasbourg (1959-69), Paris (1969-91), and Pau (1991-96). At the University of Paris, she chaired the Centre for International Economics of the Socialist Countries, the first academic research unit in France dealing with centrally planned economies. In 1996 she retired from the university and is now Senior Research fellow at ISMEA (Institute for Applied Mathematics and Economics), Paris. She has travelled extensively in Eastern Europe and Russia, both before and after the collapse of the communist regimes. She has written and edited many books and articles on the economics and international economic relations of the area. One of the world's leading authorities on transition she has taught widely in both Europe and North America.
