A classic ghost story illustrated by acclaimed cartoonist, Seth.

A man is unexpectedly appointed as doctor at the local prison. But when a terrified inmate begs to be moved, the young doctor begins to question his good fortune: the cell adjacent to the frightened man has been boarded up for years – and no one will let the doctor inside.

Bernard Edward Joseph Capes (1854-1918) was a prolific Victorian author who published more than 40 books - romances, ghost stories, poetry and history - and won awards in England and America. He is best remembered as an accomplished writer of horror stories in the vein of M.R. James, and has the distinction of writing the first detective novel commissioned and published by Collins - The Skeleton Key in 1919, Seth's comic book series, Palookaville, has been collected into It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken and Clyde Fans. He is an illustrator for The New Yorker and the designer of best-selling The Complete Peanuts. His humorous graphic novel about the obsession for comic-book collecting, Wimbledon Green, was published by Cape in 2006.
