Drama Classics: The World's Great Plays at a Great Little Price

An idealistic doctor, Stockmann, discovers that the waters from which his native spa town draws its wealth are dangerously contaminated. As the citizens realise the financial implications, Stockmann comes under increasing pressure to keep silent.

Henrik Ibsen's play An Enemy of the People was published in 1882 and first performed in 1883.

This edition of An Enemy of the People in the Nick Hern Books Drama Classics series is translated and introduced by Stephen Mulrine.

Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) was a Norwegian playwright and theatre director. His plays include: Brand, Peer Gynt, A Doll’s House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, Hedda Gabler, Rosmersholm, The Master Builder, Little Eyolf, John Gabriel Borkman and When We Dead Awaken. Stephen Mulrine (1937–2020) was a Glasgow-born poet and playwright who wrote extensively for radio and television, and published many translations, including English translations of plays in Russian by Chekhov, Gogol and Gorky, as well as translations of plays by Ibsen, Molière, Pirandello, Strindberg and others.
