J. W. von Archenholtz’s England is a political and sociological description of Great Britain during the second half of the 18th century. Based primarily on Archenholtz’s firsthand observations from 1769 to 1779, England looks with precision and anecdotal detail at the behavior of Britons of all ranks. Never without an attitude, Archenholtz conveys a wide range of topics from debates in the House of Commons to the garb of serving women. Whether describing the newly formed militia or the shenanigans of James Graham and his “celestial bed,” he provides a focused, point-driven account that will inform history enthusiasts.

Johann Wilhelm von Archenholtz (1743–1812), author and publisher, led an exuberant, complex, and fruitful life. Retired from the Prussian Army with the rank of captain before the age of 20, he spent the next 17 years traveling through Europe before settling into a life of book writing and journalism in northern Germany. Author of many books of history and current affairs, and publisher of the journal Minerva, Archenholtz is most famous now for his history of the Seven Years’ War. But in his day he was known best for England und Italien, of which this is the first English translation of the expanded edition of England.

Lois E. Bueler, editor and translator, is Professor Emerita at California State University, Chico. She taught composition, literature, and descriptive grammar in Taiwan and at Louisiana State University, Winona State University, and California State University Chico for 35 years.
