The Eastern Himalaya holds perhaps the highest levels of ethnolinguistic diversity in all Eurasia, with over 300 languages spoken by as many distinct cultural groups. What factors can explain such diversity? How did it evolve, and what can its analysis teach us about the pre-history of its wider region? This pioneering interdisciplinary volume brings together a diverse group of linguists and anthropologists, all of whom seek to reconstruct aspects of Eastern Himalayan ethnolinguistic prehistory from an empirical standpoint.
Mark W. Post has authored/edited ten books and many articles on the languages, cultures, and histories of Asia’s Indigenous peoples. Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, he is also Co-Director of the Centre for Cultural-Linguistic Diversity. Stephen Morey, Associate Professor at La Trobe University is the author of two books (and multiple articles) on languages of the India-Myanmar border region, both Tai-Kadai and Tibeto-Burman. His research has a particular focus on traditional songs and ritual language. Toni Huber is Professor of Tibetan Studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin. His nine books and numerous articles cover ritual and religion in communal life, hunting and attitudes towards wildlife, the culture of pilgrimage and sacred landscapes.
