Discover the terrifying history of horror cinema in this wickedly entertaining guide.

Adapted from the acclaimed podcast, The Evolution of Horror takes a deep dive into the history of cinema's darkest genre. Covering everything from silent films to modern masterpieces, author Mike Muncer breaks down eight key horror subgenres - including vampires, slashers, zombies and ghost stories - to explore the tropes, motifs, historical context and psychology behind why certain stories scare us so much.

Each chapter includes reviews of a host of major movies and cult classics, from Psycho to Sinners, plus a guide to the hallmarks of the subgenre and the legendary filmmakers who have mastered it. Stylishly illustrated throughout with stills, posters and stunning artworks by artist Mike Lee-Graham, this is a must-read guide to the eclectic, enthralling and deliciously macabre world of horror.

Mike Muncer is a London-based podcaster, presenter, journalist, producer, editor and creator and host of the award-winning The Evolution of Horror podcast. He produced Film 2018 with Claudia Winkleman for several years as well as the Inside Cinema video series, both for the BBC, and has also worked as for outlets such as the BFI, MTV and Little White Lies. In 2017 Mike launched The Evolution of Horror podcast, which began as a passion project and hobby, but slowly grew a life of its own to become the most successful UK horror cinema and 'Film History' podcast. By 2021 EOH became Mike's full time job and had expanded to include spin-off podcasts, live events, screening tours and videos.
