In this book Tony Dickinson asks how far this fickleness reflects reality and how far it is a fantasy induced by failure to engage fully with the Gospel narratives. Interwoven with this analysis are depictions of three imagined encounters that might have taken place during the week leading up to the Crucifixion, two involving protagonists in the Gospel narratives and a third introducing a fictional member of the Jewish authorities.
Tony Dickinson was born in Liverpool in 1948. After studying in Oxford and Lincoln and a career in university administration, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1982, serving in the Dioceses of St Albans and Oxford and, from 2018 to 2024, in the Diocese in Europe. He is an honorary canon emeritus of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and is now retired and living in Devon. He is much in demand as a retreat leader and is the author of a number of books published by
