This study investigates the motives for the establishment of the Fairbridge child migration scheme, examines its history in Australia and Canada, and outlines the experiences of many of the former child migrants.

Geoffrey Sherington is Dean of the Faculty of Education and holds a personal chair in the history of education at the University of Sydney, Australia. He is the author or co-author of 14 books and 50 articles in the general fields of history of education, history of immigration and educational policy. For the past decade he has had a particular interest in the British child and youth migration schemes of the twentieth century.

Chris Jeffery is a Researcher for the State Archives and the Fremantlc Arts Centre Press for the publication of archival documents. She is the author or co-author of several books and journal articles, and is currently preparing Edward Townley Hardman, Geologist for publication.
