The definitive publication on one of America’s most influential contemporary artists, revised and updated almost two decades after its publication

Felix Gonzalez-Torres uniquely blended the personal and the political in rigorously conceptual and purposely mutable work that is highly relevant today.

Almost two decades after its original publication, the monograph accompanying Gonzalez-Torres’s 1995 retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum is still the canonical text on the artist. Phaidon is proud to publish a newly revised and expanded edition of this art-world cult classic. Felix Gonzalez-Torres is the first and only book to thematically explore the totality of the artist’s oeuvre, reading it against the backdrop of 1990s artistic production and arguing for its cultural, social, and political relevancy, then and now.

Nancy Spector is an art historian, critic, and curator based in New York. Formerly Artistic Director and Chief Curator at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Chief Curator at the Brooklyn Museum, Spector is currently a Fellow at the Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation, and is an International Artistic Advisor for the Louis Vuitton Fondation in Paris and a Guest Curator at the Fondazione Prada, Milan.
