A comprehensive field guide to the birds of central and southern India.

Southern India is one of the great world-birding destinations, and what riches await – from the endemic-rich Western Ghats across the central plains down to the wetlands and woods of Kerala, every part of southern India heaves with birds – often the sheer biodiversity must be seen to be believed.

This guide covers the birds of the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep, including Pondicherry and the Maldives. Accurate illustrations are accompanied by a concise text highlighting identification, voice, habitat, altitudinal range, distribution and status. A code indicates the states in which the birds occur.

Portable and pocket-friendly for field use yet authoritative, this guide provides the confidence to help you identify any bird you encounter in this magical, bird-rich part of Southern Asia.

Richard Grimmett and Tim Inskipp are ornithologists specialising in the birds of southern Asia. Richard has worked for BirdLife International for more than 40 years and was in charge of the Asia Programme, based in Indonesia and then Japan, between 1997 and 2007. Until recently he was BirdLife’s Director of Conservation and is currently a Senior Conservation Advisor. Tim has visited southern Asia many times since the 1970s and has contributed to many field guides, mainly with his wife Carol Inskipp along with Richard Grimmett.
