A 2024 Foreword INDIES Award Finalist

Punchy, provocative, and deeply affirming, Fire in the Whole is the conversation many avoid, some handle poorly, and others know is long overdue..

Part personal story, part history, and part battle cry, Robert G. Callahan II delivers a sharp, witty exploration of what it means to be a Black evangelical Christian exhausted by the church’s refusal to confront its own racism. With humor, candor, and the precision of a lawyer and professor, he unpacks his disillusionment with white Christianity, offering both critique and clarity for those asking, Now what?

Callahan lays bare the church’s long history of racial injustice—not as theory, but as lived reality. He names the hypocrisy of institutions that demand silence instead of justice and the exhaustion of Black Christians tired of fruitless conversations with white congregants who just don’t get it.

But this isn’t just about what’s broken. Fire in the Whole equips Black Christians to make empowered decisions about their faith—whether that means leaving toxic spaces, building new communities, or reclaiming a liberating faith. Discussion questions and a personal inventory help readers decide what’s next.

To assist with personal reflection and group discussion, a Spotify playlist curated by the author and downloadable versions of the guides at the end of the book are available at www.wjkbooks.com/FireintheWhole.

Robert G. Callahan, II is a lawyer, professor, and writer whose personal experiences as a Black Christian inform his sharp, witty, and unflinching critiques of race and religion. An attorney at Callahan & King in Waco, Texas, and an adjunct professor at Baylor University School of Law, he brings a keen legal mind and a deep understanding of faith to his work. Named Lawyer of the Year by the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Association in 2020, Callahan is known for blending humor, history, and hard truths to spark meaningful conversations about justice and belonging.
