Solveig lives on an island where white mountains echo with ancient stories of snow and ice. And yet her world has a fiery heart, created from the ashes of exploding stars and cosmic heat...

The Flickering Fires
is the story of fire - how it has shaped Earth and the lives of all its inhabitants, from the first sparks of creation to the harnessing of fire for cooking, protection and warmth. As we journey through millennia, we see its powerful force through the Copper Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age all the way to present day. From tools to tablets, the steam engine to rockets - fire is at the heart of it all.

Grahame Baker-Smith is a self-taught award-winning illustrator from Oxford who completed his training at Berkshire School of Art. He has illustrated numerous other picture books for Templar, including The Rhythm of the Rain which won the English 4-11 Picture Book Awards and the Greenaway shortlisted Leon and the Place Between.
