Foundations of Developmental Education provides a conclusive alternative to the traditional oversimplification of the pervasive education problem in the United States. Hashway chronicles the decline of education in the U.S. over the past fifty years and studies the factors that have supposedly affected the quality of education. Analyzing the educational system, Hashway provides sound recommendations and alternatives for the delivery of instructional services.
The book begins with a thorough analysis of the developmental learning system followed by a case study. An overview of psychocybernetic models of thinking is then presented. Finally, the author examines educational applications of the developmental learning system.
ROBERT M. HASHWAY is a leading expert in developmental education and instructional technology. Dr. Hashway founded Educational & Psychological Evaluation Associates (EPEA). EPEA developed individualized/diagnostic programs for handicapped and learning disabled students. It was the EPEA experience that led Dr. Hashway to the High Technology/Education division of the Massachusetts State College System. There, he developed a statewide program for the identification, diagnosis and remediation of students with learning problems. Later, Dr. Hashway founded Microware, Inc., with its associated computer-learning centers. Those institutions, based primarily in the Northeast, trained hundreds of adults in the application of computer technology to the day-to-day world of work. These experiences and researches based on them led to the development of the SMART model and the Developmental Pyramid approach as described in this book.
