The Gift That Gives Back is a heartwarming picture book set in the Himalayan town of Manali, India, where eight-year-old Isha eagerly awaits her birthday. But when heavy rainfalls, floods, and fallen trees threaten her community, a wise conversation with her grandmother helps her realise the powerful role trees play in protecting both people and nature.

Determined to make a difference, Isha decides to share a unique “gift” with her friends.

Perfect for ages 4–8, this beautifully illustrated and culturally rich story weaves together themes of kindness, responsibility and environmental care. The book introduces children to the importance of trees and inspires them to take small, meaningful steps to protect their world.

Ideal for schools, libraries, and  families, The Gift That Gives Back encourages important conversations about nature, climate change, and how even the smallest hands can help nurture a brighter future. More than just a story, it can be used as a valuable resource to teach children about sustainability, climate change, and the importance of protecting natural habitats.

Monica is a children’s author, publisher and a literary festival curator. Through her work, she champions storytelling as a way to uplift, educate, and inspire. Originally from the Himalayan region, Manali,  where The Gift That Gives Back is set, she witnessed the impact of deforestation and floods firsthand and realised how children can develop fears after witnessing such devastating floods and heavy rainfalls. This inspired her to write  this story that help children face fears, connect with nature, and see how small actions make a big difference. With a background in science and an interest in neuroscience, her work explores how stories shape emotional well-being and creativity while simplifying complex ideas through books and educational resources. Through her writing, mentorship, and publishing initiatives, she is dedicated to nurturing diverse voices and helping the next generation to embrace storytelling not only as a source of joy, but also as a meaningful tool of expression.
