This book examines the politics of the Korean defence industry's global expansion and outreach in the recent 2020s, exploring the future evolution of the industry, which has been undergoing the stunningly speedy AI transformation (or equivalent) and the role it is set to play in the global security structure.
Despite being faced with considerable challenges over the past 60-plus years (including technological unfeasibility, long-term economic inefficiency, and political pressures), Korea’s defense industry has successfully capitalized on significant global expansion opportunities that have emerged in the 2020s. Its strategic implication has been growing fast under the evolving condition of security convergence in interregional as well as interdimensional perspectives. Chapters also analyze the impact of Korea’s growing reliance on defense-industry, which is becoming increasingly significant to the country’s stock market and national strategy. The book then examines the long-term sustainability of the rapid expansion so far enjoyed by Korea’s defense industry, and looks to the strategic approaches needed to firmly consolidate its top-ranking status in global arms market.
Ultimately providing theoretical, analytical and empirical perspectives on the Korean defense industry’s global expansion, this book will be of use to scholars and postgraduates in the fields of security studies, international political economy, and Korean studies more broadly. Policy makers involved in security and military policy, military personnel, business leaders, engineers, journalists, and decision makers will also find the volume of use.
