Great Railway Journeys: London Victoria to Brighton and the South Coast is the sixth in Roger Mason’s Great Railway Journeys series. Like the other five, it is a fascinating record of things that can be seen from trains making the journey. After Brighton the book covers the line eastwards to Hastings (close to William the Conqueror’s triumph in 1066) and westwards to Southampton (from where HMS Titanic set sail on her tragic voyage in 1912). The line to Brighton includes the dominating Battersea Power Station, the historic Crystal Palace and Clayton Tunnel, site of the 1861 disaster. Brighton is home to the Royal Pavilion, a statue of the great comedian Max Miller and the 450-ft tall i360 tower. Eastwards from Brighton are the remains of historic Lewes Castle, which is more than 900 years old. The line passes close to the Amex Stadium, Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club’s ground. The journey westward also features Brighton City Airport.
In a follow-up to the highly successful Great Railway Journeys: The Flying Scotsman Route to Edinburgh, this is a must-read for anybody who knows and uses this route.
