Vietnam was the US Special Forces' most complex and controversial mission, one that began in 1957 and ended in 1973.
Camp strike forces, mobile strike forces, mobile guerrilla forces, special reconnaissance projects, training missions and headquarters duty provided vastly differing experiences and circumstances for SF soldiers. Other fluctuating factors were the terrain, the weather and the shifting course of the war itself.
Gordon Rottman examines the training, life, weapons and combat experiences of the Special Forces soldier in this challenging environment.
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group until reassigned to the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70, before retiring after 26 years. He is now a freelance writer, living in Texas.
Kevin Lyles is a talented illustrator of 20th century military subjects. He has illustrated several books for Osprey over the years, and has also written titles on the US Army in Vietnam, a subject in which he has a long-standing interest. He lives and works in Hertfordshire, UK.
