Drawing a heart on the hand of someone you love, The Heart on Your Hand is a joyful, reassuring and inclusive story - perfect for starting school.

Told from the perspective of parents and carers across a variety of families, this book reassures young children that no matter what challenges they face, the love is constant.

From starting school to moving house, The Heart on Your Hand explores the big moments and the small, the expected and perhaps unexpected separations in childhood, offering a timeless message that will comfort anyone adjusting to change.

A beautiful and inclusive book written in lively verse from award-winning Lucy Rowland, with cosy illustrations from Åsa Gilland, perfectly capturing the sense of safety that comes from knowing that – no matter what – you are loved.

Lucy Rowland grew up in Cheltenham and gained a degree in Speech and Language Therapy from the University of Reading before becoming a children's speech and language therapist in South London. Lucy has loved reading and listening to poetry from a young age and has turned her passion into writing picture book stories with quirky characters and irresistible rhythms – as seen in Jake Bakes a Monster Cake, Pirate Pete and His Smelly Feet, Little Red Reading Hood, A Hero Called Wolf and her many other brilliant picture books including The Heart on Your Hand.

Åsa Gilland is a Swedish illustrator who loves all things retro, quirky imagery, and folk art themes. She studied interior design at Accademia Italiana Moda and has twenty years of experience in illustration. She illustrated Macmillan's The Heart on Your Hand, This is Our World and We Are All Different as well as many beautiful picture books. Åsa's father was a cartographer and she loves to travel and has lived in seven countries. She now lives in Indonesia.
