A catalog charting Henry Wessel's artistic evolution.
Henry Wessel (1942–2018) is an important American artist who made what he called “still photographs that function as visual haikus.” His practice developed over time and concluded in a series of elegantly sequenced books with minimal information beyond the images, allowing them to speak for themselves.
Henry Wessel features examples of photographs from Wessel's full oeuvre and the books where they appeared, culminating in two portfolios, Incidents (2013) and Traffic (2017). This book concludes with a eulogy by Tod Papageorge for his friend, Henry.
Jack Gray is retired from a forty-year career in investment banking and insurance. He holds a BFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied with Henry Wessel, Linda Connor, Reagan Louie, and Bill Dane. He has collected photographs and photographic books for over five decades. He also holds an MBA in finance from Columbia Business School.
