A former president of the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, he has published several books and numerous scholarly articles on Norwegian and Norwegian-American history and culture, including Marcus Thrane: A Norwegian Radical in America.



Jan Sjåvik is professor emeritus of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he has been a faculty member since 1978. He is the author of several books and articles on Norwegian literature and literary theory, including the Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Theater and Drama.
