Written by one of the world’s leading experts on the Hittites, this book charts the rise and fall of a warrior people famed for their ferocity, who built an empire which stretched from Mesopotamia to Syria and Palestine.

The author examines their training, equipment, tactics and motivations. Rare first-hand sources describe day-to-day life, from the rituals of the king’s bodyguards to the training of horses and the warriors who rode them in battle. This, together with original full-colour illustrations, makes this book a fascinating and enlightening look at an often ignored subject.

Trevor Bryce is Honorary Professor in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Queensland, Australia, and Emeritus Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of New England, Australia. He has published over 130 articles and many books.

Adam Hook studied graphic design, and began his work as an illustrator in 1983. He specializes in detailed historical reconstructions, and has illustrated Osprey titles on the Aztecs, the Greeks and 19th century American subjects. His work features in exhibitions and publications throughout the world.
