James Williams has worked as a head of biology and a head of science. He has taught biology at O level, CSE, GCSE and A level and has wide experience of teaching chemistry and physics to GCSE. He now works at Brunel University, where he has produced a distance learning PGCE in biology and contributes to the University's PGCE secondary science programme and undergraduate BA (QTS) primary degree. In addition, he delivers a highly successful TTA-funded INSET course on effective middle management, contributing to the Master's programme in educational management. He is currently studying for his PhD on the subject of primary/secondary transfer and pupil's progression and continuity in their knowledge and understanding in science. James has worked for a number of publishers as a reviewer and he has contributed to publications on initial teacher training as well as writing textbooks. He is a regular contributor to the Times Educational Supplement and has written for a number of national newspapers and magazines on science and science education and as a book reviewer. He recently worked as a consultant to QCA on the new Science Key Stage 3 Scheme of Work. He acts as a consultant for the BBC and a number of newspapers on science education and has contributed to a number of television and radio programmes. He was the principle researcher and a contributor to a BBC (Wales) TV programme, The Forgotten Evolutionist on the life and work of Alfred Russel Wallace, part of the Jones, Genes and Evolution series presented by Professor Steve Jones. He is recognised as an international authority on the life and work of Wallace.
