Why Home Made? Because the best cooking – whatever its ambition – always begins there.

Self-taught chef Thom Bateman has built an incredible career on his own terms, and that unconventional path has given him a uniquely compelling perspective on food. His ethos is simple: make it better today than yesterday. Home Made is the book that brings that philosophy to your kitchen.

Rooted in memory and a deep sense of place – from Staffordshire to Devon to North Yorkshire – Thom’s recipes occupy the space where fine dining and home cooking blur. He takes familiar dishes, pulls them apart, then builds them back up, maximising every element to create something extraordinary from something simple.

Candid and generous in equal measure, Thom shares the recipes that define him most – including closely guarded secrets from his own professional kitchen, now yours to make at home.

Home Made will inspire you to see every day as a chance to learn, to master detailed techniques with confidence and to approach even the most ambitious dishes without fear.

For any cook who wants to be even better tomorrow than they are today, this is the book they've been waiting for.

Thom Bateman started his career working at a Latin American restaurant, where at just 18 years old he was made the head chef. In 2019, he started a food blog, where he showcased his immense talent, then in 2020, he took on his family's restaurant with the intent to create a fine dining space for the first time in the area. His restaurant The Flintlock has recently gained 3AA rosettes as well as entering the Michelin guide – the first restaurant in the area to receive these accolades. He opened his second restaurant, Après, in 2024Thom represented the Central region on Great British Menu.
