The pilots of RAF Fighter Command and their historic mission in the summer of 1940 are to be commemorated by a public monument on London's Victoria Embankment, opposite the London Eye. It is to be unveiled on 18 September 2005, Battle of Britain Sunday, by HRH The Prince of Wales. "Honouring the Few", published on the same day, marks the unveiling of this important new historical site and commemorates the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. A comprehensive pictorial record of the story behind the Monument project, "Honouring the Few" is set against the backdrop of the battle itself, which was typified by the selfless daring of the pilots, many impossibly young, who fought against the odds for command of the skies. With each chapter written by an acknowledged expert in the field, "Honouring the Few" is beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned photographs of the Monument and outstanding images of the battle, many from private collections. A wealth of contemporary documents and first-hand accounts accompany the illustrations, together with modern analysis of the events of summer 1940 and a roll of honour listing the names of all the airmen who are remembered on the Monument's panels.
The general editor, RUPERT PRIOR, is former editor of International Defence News and an expert on the Second World War.
