Soshichi Tonari was born in 1991 in Niigata. Looking at Me won the Horror Picture Book Contest. The story reflects his interest in the uncanny, the psychological, and the way aspects of the everyday can evoke horror and dread. He is a cinephile and an avid reader who enjoys strength training and walking.
Junji Ito made his professional manga debut in 1987, and he is now recognized as one of the greatest contemporary artists in the horror genre. His long-form masterpieces include Gyo, No Longer Human, Tomie, and Uzumaki, and his short stories have been collected into volumes such as Alley, Deserter, Shiver, Smashed, The Liminal Zone, and several more, all available from VIZ Media. Ito’s professional memoir, Uncanny: The Origins of Fear, details the influences and experiences that led to his becoming a horror manga artist.
Masao Higashi is a critic and scholar of horror and fantasy literature born in 1958 in Kanagawa. He served as editor-in-chief of the fantasy magazine Genso Bungaku and the ghost-story journal Yu, both of which he founded. His critical study Tono monogatari to kaidan no jidai (The Tale of Tono and the Era of Ghost Stories) won Best Critical/Biographical Work at the 64th Mystery Writers of Japan Awards.
