The role of the housing market in the recent recession raised questions about similar episodes in economic history. Eugene N. White is professor of economics at Rutgers University and a research associate of the NBER. Kenneth Snowden is associate professor of economic history at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a research associate of the NBER. Price Fishback is the Frank and Clara Kramer Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona and a research associate of the NBER.
