Emily didn't want to share, she always thought it wasn't fair! Until she went to school one day, where her and a boy learned to play. 'I Don't Want to Share' is written and illustrated by a creative and passionate mother and daughter duo, who combined have over 30 years experience of working with Early Years children with expertise in working with children aged 2-7 with behaviour, social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. Erin and Sarah have created a fun, colourful, and educational picture book; through a fast paced story there is a subtle sharing strategy with a FREE Learning Resource Poster to support adults and children - to refer to, to help teach your child how to share.
Hi, I'm Sarah. I have been an Early Years Teacher for 30 years. For the first 14 years of my career, I taught in a mainstream school before moving into a specialist teaching role working with children aged 2-7 with behaviour, social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. I work with children in their preschool settings and schools modelling and supporting play whilst empowering adults to adopt strategies to improve behaviour through training and working alongside them. In my role I also work with parents, carers, and support teams to promote positive change in the home too. I believe that teaching behaviour expectations is equally as important as reading, writing and maths! Most children need to be taught concepts such as how to share and the most effective way to do this is through repetition and consistency. As young children learn best visually, practically and through practicing, I wanted to create a story that supports this strategy. My very talented daughter Erin has brought this turn taking strategy to life through her amazing, eye-catching modern art style. Young children love the rhyming text and the beautiful pictures and will want to share the book over and over again. This in turn will help them to hear and reinforce the concept of sharing whilst seeing and learning that it can be a little scary but with practice, it can be OK. The book also reinforces the role that adults take in helping children understand and learn how to take turns. As it can be difficult to remember strategies sometimes, I have found through my career that posters for adults can help them to recall and be consistent too. I have created many bespoke posters for both parents and practitioners and they tell me how they have helped them and this in turn has helped the children. So, I have created a poster guide for you on the next two pages that you can refer to, to help teach your child how to share. I hope you find this helpful. This book will hopefully be the first of a series of strategies told through stories to support adults and children with a variety of concepts such as making choices, following instructions and many more! We hope you love the book as much as we did creating it!
