In the Company of Artists is the first major study of Skowhegan’s history, philosophy and impact. By uncovering narratives on Skowhegan and providing an institutional record, the project expands our understanding of American art production and alternative art schools in the post–World War II era.

In the Company of Artists draws from primary source material, including: new and unpublished interviews and roundtable discussions with faculty and alumni artists; photographs and film stills; ephemera; and artworks produced over 70+ years. Through firsthand accounts from artists, staff and arts patrons, the book is a window into this intensely private institution that was ahead of its time with respect to re-presentation, equity and inclusion.
Faye Hirsch, PhD in Art History, Yale University, serves as Program Coordinator in the School of Art+Design at SUNY Purchase. An author, curator and critic, she has published widely on contemporary art and was senior editor of Art in America (2003-12).

Ingrid Schaffner has written extensively on contemporary art and curatorial practice, authoring more than 20 books, 200 articles, reviews, and features. She was chief curator at the ICA, Philadelphia (2000–15), curated the 57th Carnegie International, and is currently the first Curator of the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX. Dancing Foxes Press, Editors. 30+ years’ experience working with artists and arts institutions on exceptional books.
