Ralph Shanks is the author of Indian Baskets of Central California and California Indian Baskets. He is president of the Miwok Archeological Preserve of Marin. He is a research associate in anthropology at the University of California, Davis. He also teaches Native American basketry at the University of California, Davis, and the College of Marin. Lisa Woo Shanks is the editor of the Indian Baskets of California and Oregon Series.
