This book explores different aspects of information—both explicit and implicit—and how it can be understood as a unified concept or as components within larger systems where human needs and technological possibilities interact. The book offers a deeper understanding of the importance of on-site studies in various activities and critical development phases for the common good. It presents methods and approaches such as situated design, which acknowledges that context emerges in the interaction between individuals and situations and is constantly evolving. The book is intended for students in information design, interaction design, spatial design, graphic design, and product design. It is also relevant for professionals working with organizational communication, both internal and external.

Yvonne Eriksson is a Professor of Information Design and Deputy Head of the Department of Health Science, Innovation and Design at Mälardalen University, Sweden. She serves on the Design Society Advisory Board and is Co-Chair of the Special Interest Group on Human Behavior in Design.

Her main research interests include visual communication and visual management, particularly in relation to the perceptual and cognitive processes involved in interpreting visuals such as images, 3D objects, and VR/AR environments. One of her focus areas is gender issues in visual communication. She has authored several books, book chapters, and papers on gender, art, design, and the role of visual communication in change management.

Yvonne Eriksson has also conducted research on assembly instructions for global markets and interactive assembly in VR. In addition, she leads projects exploring the role of images in various contexts, including educational textbooks, children’s storybooks, and materials for teaching children with visual impairments. Her recent publications include Different Perspectives in Design Thinking (2022) and Foundations of Visual Communication (co-authored with Anette Göthlund, 2023).
