Digital technology is now an essential supplement to traditional theatre design methods. An Introduction to Digital Tools for Theatre Designers shows how CAD, CGI and 3D printing can expand creative possibilities without replacing the skills of sketching, drafting and model-making. From technical drawings to photo-realistic renderings, this book explains how digital tools can streamline workflows and enhance collaboration while remaining grounded in established theatre craft. Clear, practical chapters cover CAD software and drafting conventions, photo-realistic rendering techniques and the use of 3D printing for set models and prototypes. The book also explores digital imagery, VR and tools for creating virtual characters, alongside methods for combining hand-drawing with graphics programs in costume design. With comparisons of leading software, step-by-step guidance and examples of emerging practices, this book is an indispensable resource for students and professionals alike. Inside you’ll find guidance on: CAD software, vector vs. bitmap graphics, and industry-standard tools, Creating accurate stage plans, drawings and scaled printouts, CGI techniques for textures, transparency, lighting and walkthroughs, 3D printing for models, props and furniture, plus future developments, Virtual reality, digital characters and imagery in design workflows, Combining digital and traditional methods in set and costume design
