He regularly contributed "Vogue's Own Boutique" under the tutelage of Diana Vreeland, but in 1972 he suddenly abandoned his New York studio and spend the rest of his life in determined anonymity employed as a stained-glass designer in Memphis. When he died in 1997 at the age of 69, few people would have guessed that this reclusive artist had been at the centre of the glitterati in the Swinging Sixties and was acknowledged by his peers as one of the preeminent photographers in the business.
