‘Are we making money today or what?’

Welcome to Jaja’s! This bustling Harlem braiding salon is where neighborhood women come to have their greatest hairstyle dreams come true, all in the hands of a lively group of West African, immigrant braiders.

Across one hot summer's day, these women experience everything in the pressure cooker of the sweltering shop: from demanding customers to secrets and lies, laughter and betrayal. But each of these women has big dreams as well, dreams which increasingly pit them against the city they call home.

The UK premiere of this Tony Award-winning comedy reunites writer Jocelyn Bioh and director Monique Touko, the team behind smash-hit School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play.

This edition was published to coincide with the Madison Wells Live and Chase This Productions co-production at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in March 2026.

Jocelyn Bioh is an award-winning Ghanaian-American writer and performer from New York City. Her plays include SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY (Kilroy’s List, 2016; CTG; MCC Theater; Lortel Award Winner; OCC John Gardner Award Winner; Hull-Warriner Award Winner; Drama Desk Nomination; Drama League Nomination; Off-Broadway Alliance nomination), NOLLYWOOD DREAMS (Cherry Lane Mentor Project, 2017; Kilroy's List, 2015), and AFRICAN AMERICANS (Produced at Howard University, 2015; Southern Rep Ruby Prize Award Finalist, 2011; O'Neill Center Semifinalist, 2012). Jocelyn conceived and wrote the libretto for THE LADYKILLER’S LOVE STORY (music and lyrics by CeeLo Green) and GODDESS (book writer).
