"Emerging from new Scottish town anonymity during the early 1980, The Jesus And Mary Chain have carved a path through alternative music that is as confrontational as it is hypnotic. Formed by brothers Jim and William Reid, the band fused sweet, 1960s-style pop melodies with walls of distortion, feedback, and drum-machine minimalism, creating a sound both nostalgic and dangerous.
Their 1985 debut Psychocandy detonated like a cultural flashpoint—equal parts classic pop and sonic violence. Beneath its sheets of noise were unforgettable melodies, and the album quickly became a cornerstone of alternative and indie rock. Rather than repeat themselves, the band then pivoted on Darklands (1987), stripping away much of the distortion to reveal a moodier, more reflective core and an even stronger set of songs.
Through the slicker textures of Automatic (1989) and onto the triumphant comeback of Honey’s Dead (1992), the group continued to evolve, flirting with electronic rhythms and industrial sounds. Later releases showed a quieter, acoustic side before the band fractured after Munki (1998). It was recorded in adversity, but remains a band favourite. Reuniting a decade later for well-received live dates around the world, the Reid brothers rewarded fans with Damage And Joy (2017) and Glasgow Eyes (2024), proving their chemistry - and their knack for blending beauty with chaos – has remained intact.
Those who are new to the group and hardcore fans alike will enjoy this tribute to their entire catalogue. Few bands have balanced noise and melody so elegantly."
Robin Kennedy spent his formative years in an Ayrshire village twenty miles from the hometown of William and Jim Reid. Prior to moving to Edinburgh, he enjoyed four years studying English at Stirling University, where he frequently neglected the pursuit of academic excellence in favour of playing guitar. Now in his twentieth year as a secondary school English teacher in Fife, he has written this book as a tribute to the music of The Jesus and Mary Chain, a band he has been a fan of for almost four decades.
