"Journal of the Waterloo Campaign" is an extraordinary first-hand account of the role played by G Troop, Royal Horse Artillery in the great military campaign of Waterloo in 1815. Written by the commander of the troop, Captain Cavalie Mercer, from the rough notes he jotted down each evening, this remarkable journal traces the day-to-day progress of the campaign from the commander's embarkation for Belgium in April 1815 to his final return to England in January 1816. It offers a compelling account of the horrors of Waterloo and the nature of Napoleonic warfare, from the rare and unusual stance of an artillery officer, as well as a fascinating insight into the social scene of rural Belgium and northern France during this period.
Gen. Cavalie Mercer (1783-1868), an officer in the Royal Horse Artillery, kept a diary of his personal impressions and experiences during the Waterloo campaign, never intending them to be published. It was not until after his death, in 1870, that this occurred, and the book has since come to be regarded as a classic. This edition was originally published in 1927, and is complete with an introduction by the Hon. Sir John Fortescue and a new foreword by Gen. Sir Alex Harley.
