Forced to flee from England following his involvement in an improper relationship with a young boy, William Beckford kept this fascinating and entertaining journal while living in Portugal and Spain, where he continued with his hedonistic lifestyle and scandalous behaviour.

William Beckford (1760-1844), the 'Fool of Fonthill,' was the son of a Lord Mayor of London, fluent in seven languages and schooled in philosophy and law. Author of the Gothic novel Vathek (1782), he is perhaps best remembered as the builder of the massive Fonthill Abbey and also for his involvement in a number of sexual scandals around Europe.
