On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Roe v. Wade. Holding that a woman’s substantive due process right to terminate her pregnancy in the early months outweighed state interests in maternal health and fetal protection, the Court struck down a Texas law permitting abortions only to save the life of the mother. This series is divided into three volumes, with each part containing multiple case studies. Neal Devins is Goodrich Professor of Law, Professor of Government, and Director of the Institute of Bill of Rights Law at the William & Mary School of Law. Among his books are Shaping Constitutional Values: The Supreme Court, Elected Government, and the Abortion Dispute; The Democratic Constitution (co-authored with Louis Fisher); and A Year at the Supreme Court (coedited with Davison Douglas and published by Duke University Press). Wendy L. Watson is a lecturer in Political Science at the University of North Texas. She is the co-editor (with Neal Devins) of Federal Abortion Politics: A Documentary History and the author of "Forensic DNA Analysis" (in the edited volume Privacy in the Digital Age: 21st-Century Challenges to the Fourth Amendment). Her research interests include equal access to the courts, the interaction between politics and constitutional law, and pedagogy.
