Oxford Readings in Philosophy The aim of this series is to bring together important recent writings in major areas of philosophical inquiry, selected from a variety of sources, mostly periodicals, which may not be conveniently available to the university student or the general reader. The editors of each volume contribute an introductory essay on the items chosen and on the questions with which they deal. A selective bibliography is appended as a guide to further reading. Vere Chappell is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts. He is the co-author, with Willis Doney, of Twenty-Five Years of Descartes Scholarship (Garland 1987) and editor of the Cambridge Companion to Locke (1995). He has also edited Essays on Early Modern Philosophers (12 vols., Garland 1992) and Descartes' Meditations (Rowman and Littlefield 1997). His other publications include articles on Descartes and other early modern philosophers, as well as several on Locke.
