In the first decades of the twentieth century, luxurious liners and warships ruled the waves. In May 2004, Ballard returned to the site of his most famous underwater discovery, the Titanic, to map the ship and analyse the causes and rate of its decay.

Robert Ballard's book The Discovery of the Titanic has sold over one million copies and he has produced other highly successful books about his explorations of the battleship Bismarck and the warships lost at Guadalcanal. Rick Archbold worked with Robert Ballard on this book, as well as The Discovery of the Titanic, The Discovery of the Bismarck and The Lost Ships of Guadalcanal. Ken Marschall is an internationally acclaimed maritime artist whose paintings appear in four of Robert Ballard's books. He was historical adviser on the James Cameron film Titanic.
