‘I don’t understand how we got here. How we got to the point of actual physical fucking violence’

It seemed so straightforward: her and him, sex, whenever they wanted.

But when the casual becomes routine and what was convenient turns all-consuming, she’s left trying to figure out, trying to remember when the ‘straightforward’ became so vicious.

Michelle Barnette’s brutal debut play explores the toxicity of casual dating and the grey area between love and sex, consent and compliance, yes and no.

Michelle Barnette is a writer and producer. After her debut play Love Me Now, Michelle was commissioned to write a play for the students at the University of Worcester. Her second play, The Last Nine Months (of the rest of our lives) had a run at VAULT Festival in February 2019. She has taken part in the Criterion New Writing Group and is currently working on her next play.

Michelle is currently the producer at the King’s Head Theatre in Islington. Most recently she produced Coming Clean and Opera Undone at Trafalgar Studios. As a freelancer, her credits include: Sparks (VAULT Festival/Pleasance Edinburgh/HighTide Festivals 2018 - Winner, Best Musical), Caterpillar (Theatre503/Stephen Joseph Theatre), QU4RTER (The Other Palace), Che: The Musical (BEAM 2018), Brutal Cessation (Assembly Edinburgh, Theatre503); Dust (Underbelly, Edinburgh); and The Scar Test (Soho Theatre/U.K. Tour)
