Where once a Romano-British settlement sprawled across the hills in the north of England, there lies a modern town. Marion Fox (18851973) was an English poet and novelist who wrote historical romances and innovative ghost stories. Between 1910 and 1928 she published seven novels, including Ape's Face, The Mystery Keepers and The Luck of the Town, in which supernatural forces from the past return to haunt and destabilise the modern world. In The Week magazine, 2016, China Mieville listed Ape's Face as one of his six favourite novels.
